In angelfish it is normal/common to have extended fin rays in the caudal, anal and pelvic/ventral fins but it is uncommon, even rare to have extended fin rays in the dorsal fin. Among the wild angelfish variants i've seen in pictures, so far I have only seen extended dorsal fin rays in Manacapuru Red Shoulder and Altum. Since an angelfish with extended dorsal fin rays is unusual, I'm classifying any angel that has these in addition to extended finrays in th caudal, anal and pelvic/ventral fins as a Threadfin angelfish. The descriptive name Threadfin is borrowed from the Threadfin Cichlid ( Acarichthys heckeli ) and also from the marine fish, Threadfin Jack ( Alectis ciliaris and Alectis indica ), whose extended fin rays give their common name, Threadfin. This Platinum Marble angelfish only has two extended dorsal fin rays, however, the length of one is the longest I have observed ... Breeding and selection for threadfins is just beginning and I wonder what development could be achieved after a few to several years. Hopefully in time there will be Threadfin angelfish with much longer and more extended fin rays.
